Early Goals Lead ORU Past Southern Utah, 2-0
The Golden Eagles (8-6-1 overall, 4-2-1 Summit) remain in the hunt for one of four Summit League Tournament berths. ORU is now tied with North Dakota State for fifth place in the league standings.
Senior Tiffany Heward got things started for the Golden Eagles, scoring the first goal of her career in the 14th minute. Heward’s goal came after freshman Jennifer Abernathy’s shot deflected off the crossbar and landed in front of Heward, who knock the ball in from eight feet away for a 1-0 lead.
ORU took a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute. Freshman Mary-Kate Halsmer took a pass from Abernathy and drilled a shot past Thunderbirds (4-9-1, 1-5-0) goalkeeper Charly Booth.
The Golden Eagles defense took care of the rest. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler made three saves in recording her second shutout of the season, while the backline kept Southern Utah from ever mounting a serious challenge.
ORU closes out the home portion of its schedule when the Golden Eagles host UMKC, 1 p.m., Sunday.
