Abernathy Named Summit League Freshman of the Year

ELMHURST, Ill. – Oral Roberts rookie Jennifer Abernathy (Broken Arrow, Okla./Union HS) has been named Summit League Women’s Soccer Freshman of the Year, the league office announced on Friday when  its annual season awards were handed out.

South Dakota State’s Danni Healy and Western Illinois’ Jenny Green captured the top awards, being named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. Oral Roberts’ Jennifer Abernathy was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while Oakland’s Nick O’Shea earned his third Coach of the Year award.

Abernathy was named Freshman of the Year after leading Oral Roberts with 14 points, six goals and three game-winning goals on the year. In league matches, the Broken Arrow, Okla., native was tied for third in the league with four goals and tied for fifth in points with nine. She played in all 18 matches for the Golden Eagles this season, starting 12.

Healy captured her first career Offensive Player of the Year award after collecting a total of 10 points in league play from four goals and two assists. The senior forward helped lead South Dakota State to a 6-2-1 league record and 11-3-4 overall mark. Healy led the Jackrabbits in goals (7), points (18) and game-winning goals (3), while starting all 18 matches on the year.

Green earned Defensive Player of the Year after anchoring the Western Illinois backline that led the league in goals allowed, goals against average and shutouts. As a team, the Leathernecks allowed a total of 15 goals in all matches and six for league matches, while posting a team goals against average of 0.63 and five shutouts in league matches. The senior also added three goals and four assists for a team-leading 10 points.

Abernathy was named Freshman of the Year after leading Oral Roberts with 14 points, six goals and three game-winning goals on the year. In league matches, the Broken Arrow, Okla., native was tied for third in the league with four goals and tied for fifth in points with nine. O’Shea collects his third career Coach of the Year award after leading Oakland to an 8-0-1 league record and 12-5-2 overall mark. His Golden Grizzlies led the league in five offensive categories, while the team’s 25 points are the most in league history.

Members of the all-league first team were IUPUI’s Megan Hock (7 goals, 15 points), North Dakota State’s Quin Ryan (5 goals, 14 points) and Abbey Stratton (7 assists, 11 points), Oakland’s Nicole DeLuca (9 goals, 22 points), Dani Haelewyn (7 goals, 7 assists), Sarah Lynch (7 goals, 3 GWG) and Kara Weber (4 goals, 4 assists), South Dakota State’s Healy and Kaitlin Justice (6 assists, 12 points) and Western Illinois’ Laura Atkinson (7 shutouts, 0.70 GAA) and Green.

The all-league second team consisted of IPFW’s Tara O’Toole (4 goals, 11 points) and Lisa Underwood (6 goals, 14 points), IUPUI’s Margaret Allgeier (19 GP, 1 shot), North Dakota State’s Michelle Gaffaney (3 goals, 6 points), Oakland’s Serena San Cartier (4 goals, 10 points), Oral Roberts’ Abernathy and Lauren Parks (5 points, 21 shots), South Dakota State’s Steph Peterson (3 points) and Elisa Stamatakis (0.89 GAA, 8 shutouts) and Western Illinois’ Kelly Diershow (4 goals, 9 points).

The 11 players selected to the all-freshmen team were IUPUI’s Sarah Colby (4 goals, 3 assists), Sammi Deer (19 GP, 3 shots) and Sarah Wong (2 assists 18 shots), UMKC’s Sarah Shaughnessy (18 GP, 4 shots), Oakland’s Payj O’Shea (0.35 GAA, 2 shutouts), Jordan Penz (2 goals, 5 points) and San Cartier, Oral Roberts’ Abernathy, South Dakota State’s Darci Miller (2 goals, 5 points) and Western Illinois’ Kristen Becker (15 GP) and Jordan Spaciel (4 goals, 9 points).
