Parsons’ goal not enough as Cowgirls top ORU, 2-1
TULSA, Okla. – Jordan Parsons put in a goal to break a scoreless tie early in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team fell in exhibition action to in-state rival Oklahoma State, 2-1.
After a defensive battle in the first half between the Golden Eagles and the Cowgirls, ORU struck first in the second as Kayla Keller came off the right side and found Parsons in the middle of the box. Parsons slipped the ball passed the diving Cowgirl keeper for the goal.
However, the Cowgirls answered with a pair of goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes of play off the foot of Allie Stephenson. Stephenson scored both goals on tough shots off the left side from just outside the penalty area. Midfielder Madison Mercado earned the assist on the equalizer.
Despite being outshot 19-7 by the Cowgirls, the Golden Eagles made their opportunities count with four shots on goal. Jennifer Abernathy had two shots on target, including the first opportunity by either team early in the match that was tipped over the post by Cowgirl keeper Rosa Medina.
Keller had an opportunity late in the game that was knocked away by OSU’s backup keeper, Michela Ongaro.
Helen Erb got the start for the Golden Eagles between the pipes and recorded three saves, while Medina and Ongaro combined for three saves.
First-year Head Coach Roger Bush will go for his first victory as the Golden Eagles open regular season play on the road on Friday. ORU will take on Missouri State in Springfield, Mo., at 7 p.m.
