TULSA, Okla. – Mary-Kate Halsmer put in her seventh career game-winner on Sunday to lift the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory in overtime against Arkansas State at the Case Soccer Complex.

The Golden Eagles close out non-conference play with a 5-2 record, while Arkansas State fell to 3-3-2 following their weekend trip to Tulsa.

Both squads struggled getting anything going through the first 60 minutes of action. However, ASU scored a pair of goals in a three minute span as Katey Carmichael converted on goal on a loose ball in the box and Samhia Simao took a through ball from Mykel Ward in the 64th for the second goal.

In a 2-0 hole, the ORU offense began to pick up its attack with 20 minutes remaining regulation. In the 77th minute, Kaily Cox got a head on the ball off a corner kick by Ashley Martin, putting the header into the right corner of the net for the goal.

It was Cox’s first goal as a Golden Eagle.

Four minutes later, Megan Giles drew a hard foul in the penalty area, setting up the second ORU penalty kick in three matches. Jennifer Abernathy was called upon for the attempt, blasting it past the ASU keeper for an easy goal.

Abernathy capped a great week in which she scored four goals in a seven day span.

Finally, just three minutes into extra time, the Golden Eagles got the golden goal from Halsmer. Giles dribbled the ball along the right side of the pitch, pushing it across the field to a waiting Halsmer who converted an easy game-winner.

It was Halsmer’s third goal and second game-winner of the season, while Giles picked up her second assist of the year.

Despite allowing two goals in the midst of traffic in the box, Maddie Rhodes played well in her second start of the season, earning five saves in the victory. Amanda Lee took the loss for ASU, also knocking away five ORU shots.

Abernathy led the ORU squad with four shots on goal, taking 11 total, while Cox had two shots on target.

The Golden Eagles will take the pitch Nacogdoches, Texas, on Friday evening as they kick off Southland Conference action against league favorite Stephen F. Austin.
