KANSAS CITY - Alvaro Gutierrez and Parker Allen took singles victories on Saturday afternoon but it was not enough, as Oral Roberts lost a 5-2 decision to South Dakota State at the Plaza Tennis Center.
With the loss, ORU’s season ends at 1-15, with an 0-5 Summit League mark.
Gutierrez took down SDSU’s Justin Pyle in the top flight, 6-2, 6-1, and Allen raced past Dominic Rossetto at the second spot, 6-3, 6-4.
But SDSU (7-13, 2-3 Summit League) won the other five points, starting with two doubles victories. Gutierrez and Nathaniel Avery lost a barn burner to James Thorp and Parker Lawley, 9-8 (7-5), and Pyle and Rossetto knocked off Allen and Pedro Moreno, 8-3.
At No. 3 singles, Lawley earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Moreno, and Thorp won his fourth flight match, 6-1, 6-0, over Avery.
At the fifth spot, Alejandro Marin beat ORU’s Matthew Prevost, 6-2, 6-3. The Jackrabbits also took the sixth court by default.
The 2012 Summit League Championship begins next week in Kansas City.
