DES MOINES, Iowa-Three of the four ORU athletes in attendance at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships competed on Wednesday, posting a trio of solid performances, led by Clive Chafausipo in the long jump.
On his second attempt, Chafausipo posted a mark of 7.82m (25-8), which would prove to be his best. It was enough to lead his flight in the competition, but put him fourth overall after the first two rounds, easily propelling him into the finals. After his first attempt in the finals, Chafausipo fouled on his second and with his fourth-place finish in hand, decided to pass his final attempt. The fourth-place finish gives him All-American status for the second time in his career after earning the honor after a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Jeffery Gibson ran 50.72 in the 400m hurdle semifinals, just 0.03 off his school record time, but finished fourth in his heat and 12th overall, just missing the top-8 that advanced to the finals in the event.
Rounding out the day one competitors for ORU was Camila Pirelli, who posted a mark of 44.70m (145-5) in the javelin on her second throw. She was unable to best that on her third and final attempt and finished 20th overall.
The final competitor for ORU will be pole vaulter Jack Whitt, who continues on his quest for his first national championship.
