TULSA, Okla.-First baseman Jared Schlehuber, the 2012 Summit League Player of the Year, has signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Royals organization. Details of the contract were not released.
Schlehuber agreed to terms with the organization and made the trip up to Idaho Falls, Idaho on Thursday. After passing the physical, the two parties signed the contract, making him the third Golden Eagle to sign a professional contract this year after Cam Schiller (Texas Rangers) and Bennett Pickar (Detroit Tigers) each signed with their respective teams after being selected in the 2012 MLB Draft.
The Aurora, Colo. Native was named a finalist for the 2012 Fan's Choice Award, and is currently in fourth place with one week of voting remaining. Fan's can log on to Facebook to vote for Schlehuber. In his senior campaign, Schlehuber .316 while leading the league with 13 home runs and recording 56 RBI. In Summit League play, those numbers skyrocketed, as Schlehuber batted .373 with five home runs and 33 RBI.
Schlehuber will begin his professional career as part of the Idaho Falls Chukars, the Rookie affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
