EUGENE, Ore.-After a slight scare as he missed on his first two attempts, junior pole vaulter Jack Whitt cleared the opening height of 17-4.5 (5.30m) on his third and final attempt at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the University of Oregon, continuing his quest for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
Although the height should have been an easy clear for all 24 competitors who were battling for a spot in the top-12 for the finals on Thursday, only 11 were able to clear it.
Up one height at 17-8.5 (5.40m), Whitt cleared on his first attempt and was one of only five to clear the height, as he finished second overall after the preliminary rounds.
Whitt and the 10 other remaining competitors will compete on Thursday at 7:05 central time with the top three earning a spot on Team USA in the 2012 London Olympics. Live results for that competition can be found at www.USATF.org.
