TULSA, Okla. - Despite outshooting their opponent Friday evening, the Oral Roberts men's soccer team dropped their first exhibition match of the season against Northeastern State, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles had the first opportunity during the 13th minute when Craig Rogers had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Just five minutes later, Cody Lofgren had another opportunity to get the home team on the board, but RiverHawk keeper Jordan Ladbrooke made a great save to keep the game scoreless.
Northeastern got on the board late in the first half when Joel Mendoza found Juan Gonzalez in the center of the box for the first goal of the contest.
The RiverHawk momentum carried on through the intermission as they added a goal a little over a minute and a half into the second stanza, followed up by their final goal just a minute later.
Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, it was a mistake that broke the visitor's momentum. In the 53rd minute, a header off a RiverHawk defender found its way past his own keeper for the first Golden Eagle goal of the contest.
Lofgren closed out the scoring with a left footer into the back of the net from the right side of the box. Gerardo Salas was credited with the assists on the play.
Despite the final score, the Golden Eagles outshot their Div. II opponent 19-to-13 and had 10 shots on goal, four more than the RiverHawks. Including his goal, Lofgren finished with two looks at goal, as did Tom Adams, while Salas, Rogers, Johnny Chavez, Griffith Poindexter and Jose Alvarez each added one shot on goal each.
Daniel McCarthy got the start in goal for the Golden Eagles, recording three saves.
Up next for Oral Roberts is another exhibition match against Oklahoma City, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.
