TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts men's soccer squad closed the exhibition portion of their season in style on Tuesday evening by defeating Oklahoma Baptist, 2-0.
The Golden Eagles end the exhibition stretch with a win, loss and draw.
Picking up the shutout in the victory was keeper Daniel McCarthy. A junior from Endwell, N.Y., McCarthy kept the Bison out of the net with four saves, including a great diving block during the first half on a hard shot OBU's Mario Maia.
When asked in a postgame interview about the lack of scoring opportunities for the Bison, head coach Steve Hayes praised his defense.
"I think we found a system that suits our personal," said Hayes. "The back four have done a good job and Griffith Pointdexter and Trevor Laffoon are very, very solid in the central part of the defense."
"Hopefully we can continue on with that trend and continue on into the season."
The first goal of the contest for the Golden Eagles came with a little over nine minutes remaining in the first stanza off the foot of Craig Rogers, with Alex White getting credit for the assist.
It didn't take long for the home team to add a little insurance as the second half started. Just 47 seconds into play, Kevin Machado found Michael Greenfield in the middle of the pitch, who then booted a shot from just outside the box. Greenfield's shot hit the crossbar before crossing the threshold for the goal.
Gerardo Salas, Tom Adams and Ryan Wiet also had solid looks at goal for the Golden Eagles.
The Bison had a great opportunity to cut the game to a one goal difference in the 73rd minute of the match. Chance Johnson had a point blank shot in the box that was saved by McCarthy, with Victor Costa getting the rebound for the goal. However, Costa was ruled offside, nullifying the goal.
Oral Roberts' regular season schedule kicks off on Friday at 7 p.m. at Houston Baptist. It will be the first contest for them as well, tying No. 16 SMU in their lone exhibition match over the weekend.
