TULSA, Okla. - An opportunity to make a statement in its new conference is available on Sunday when the Oral Roberts women's soccer team hosts the second place squad in the Southland Conference, Sam Houston State.
The Golden Eagles (7-4-2, 1-1-0) and the Bearkats (5-7-1, 2-0-1) match up at the Case Soccer Complex on the ORU campus at 1 p.m. On Friday, the Golden Eagles were victorious over Northwestern State (La.), 3-0, and the Bearkats played to a scoreless draw at Southeastern Louisiana.
After losing three consecutive matches to UTEP, Rice and Air Force, the Bearkats kicked off their Southland schedule with victories Nicholls State and Central Arkansas, before Friday's draw.
A key battle in the match, as been the case several times this season, is between the counterparts between the posts, ORU's Helen Erb and SHSU's Kylie Hambleton. Erb has nearly had a record breaking 2012 campaign with six matches remaining in the regular season, as she has recorded seven shutouts, while Hambleton has been credited with two shutouts in the three conference matches.
Hambleton is the reigning conference goalkeeper of the week award winner.
Coming off a two goal performance in Friday's victory for the Golden Eagles, Jennifer Abernathy and Sam Houston's Kirby Zak are both tied for fourth in goals in conference play only.
The Golden Eagles have won both the previous two matches against the Bearkats, including last season's match in Tulsa, 3-2. Jordan Parsons led the ORU in the victory with an assist on the opening goal off the foot of Abernathy, and adding the second goal of the match in the 54th minute.
