TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts men's soccer team is geared up for its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday night as the Golden Eagles take on Newman at 6 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.
It will be a great opportunity for the Golden Eagles (3-12, 2-4) to gain some momentum heading into Saturday's final Summit League showdown, a must win with conference tournament hopes on the line, at home with Omaha. The opponents from Wichita, the Jets of Newman, come to town with a 6-9-1 overall record.
A member of NCAA Div. II, the Jets play in the Heartland Conference.
On Saturday, the Golden Eagles fell short on the road at Western Illinois. Down 1-0 in the first half, sophomore Cody Lofgren netted his third his third goal of the season, with Gerardo Salas picking up the assist. Unfortunately, just two minutes into the second half, the Leathernecks capitalized on a Golden Eagle mistake for the game-winner.
The Jets are coming off a big Heartland victory on Saturday as they topped Texas-Permian Basin on Senior Day, 4-1. Brandon Carlos netted a pair of goals in the victory, and Armadou Doumbia and Matt McConnell added the other two goals.
Last season, the Golden Eagles topped the Jets at home, 3-1, including a Jets own goal. Doumbia scored the lone goal for the Jets in that contest.
The men's soccer program has never lost to Newman in 11 matches, dating back to 1988. The Golden Eagles have won seven against the Jets under the leadership of head coach Steve Hayes.
