TULSA, Okla. - As the 2013 season nears, the Oral Roberts baseball team is hard at work with preparations as they began their spring workouts last week.
"When you get down to this time of year, the thing that sticks out the most is how excited everybody is to get out there, start running around, be together as a team and start working," first year head coach Ryan Folmar said on Tuesday. "This is the time of year when you can see that first game coming, it's getting closer and closer and there is just a lot of excitement to get started."
Folmar took over the reins of the program in June after serving as an assistant with the program for the past nine seasons. And Folmar has a lot to be excited about, returning a couple of preseason All-American's in Drew Bowen and Jose Trevino, as well as returning 2011 NCBWA Freshman All-American pitcher Alex Gonzalez.
"Drew Bowen and Alex Gonzalez are going to anchor that staff," Folmar commented when asked about the Golden Eagle pitching.
However, Folmar was also high on the newcomers on the mound, mentioning that there are some who have an opportunity to work their way into the rotation.
"We have a good group of incoming players that are going to take on key roles. It's that time of year that it's a lot of fun to see how guys develop, and once those lights come on and put another team in the other dugout and see how they react."
One of the areas coach Folmar mentioned as a focus area during the fall and early part of spring is in the field on defense.
"We have some spots where there are a lot of new players coming in, so I think chemistry is one thing," explained Folmar. "I think if we can solidify some of the defense, our pitching staff is going to carry us through the early part of the year and hopefully later in the year we'll be a balanced club."
First pitch of the 2013 season for the Golden Eagles will come on Feb. 15 when they host Saint Louis in the first of a three game set at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Golden Eagles will kick off its Southland Conference schedule at home as well, hosting Central Arkansas in a three game series beginning March 22.
