FRISCO, Texas - For the second time this season, seniors Jack Whitt and Jeffery Gibson sweep the weekly track and field awards in the Southland, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Gibson was named the conference's track athlete of the week while Whitt earned the field athlete of the week award. Madison Reynolds and Lauren McFarland received honorable mentions in the women's awards.
In a successful weekend in Ames, Gibson ran wild on the competition, winning the 200 meter on Friday evening, and followed that performance with a second place finish in the 400 meter. Both times, 21.54 seconds in the 200 and 46.55 in the 400, were personal best for Gibson in a Golden Eagle uniform.
A native of Freeport, Bahamas, Gibson was just a hair behind the winning in the 400, crossing just .05 seconds behind.
Participating in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Whitt easily won the invite category in the pole vault on Saturday. The Norman, Okla., native recorded the seventh best performance this season in Div. 1, reaching a mark of 5.51 meters (18-1).
The mark Whitt reached was more than a meter higher than the second place vaulter. He was the only non-BCS conference member to finish in the top 10 at the meet.
