DENVER, Colo. - Oral Roberts University earned their first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon, a 6-3 triumph over Metro State at the Gates Tennis Center. The win improves ORU’s record to 1-11.

The Roadrunners fall to 8-10 with the loss, which was contested under NCAA Division II rules. Each doubles match counted for a full point.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was the trio of Fabian Zierleyn, Jason Mechali and Braxton Bates. Each of the three ORU players earned two points each in the match.

Zierleyn and Mechali teamed up to win the top flight pairs match, 8-2, over Gabriel Vlahos and Adrien Delvaux. ORU lost on the second court, where Nathaniel Avery and Parker Allen dropped a 9-7 decision to Nick Baker and Alec Parmenter. But Bates and Gabriel Kanelopoulos came back to win on court three, 8-4, over Jonathan Evangelista and Ryan Joyce.
The Golden Eagles took control of the match on the top three singles courts, which each resulted in victories. Zierleyn topped Delvaux, 6-1, 7-6, at the No. 1 spot, and Mechali won the second court, 6-4, 6-2, over Baker. Allen completed the upper half sweep, with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 win over John Qualls.

Metro won two of the three bottom courts, though it did not affect the overall outcome. Evangelista was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Avery on court four, though ORU’s Bates scored a 7-6, 6-1 win over Parmenter in the fifth flight. The final court went to Joyce, 7-5, 6-4, over Kanelopoulos.

ORU will look for their second straight win on Tuesday, March 26, when they face John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark.
